The Sleepy Eye Police Department has received a couple of reports about a scam we have not heard of before. A male calls an elderly person and addresses them as Grandma or Grandpa. That male states that they are their oldest grandson and they have gotten into a bind and need their grandparent’s help. They explain a situation where they went to the Dominican Republic for a friend’s funeral and are being detained by the police. They ask the grandparent to send them money to pay their bail in the Dominican Republic. The caller asked their grandparent not to tell anyone because they feel ashamed. The situation may change but ultimately they need their grandparent to send money to a foreign county. Please be aware of this scam and others like it.
