Versailles-The Indiana State Police Board recently approved the retirement of K-9 Kane, an eight year veteran of the Indiana State Police with the Versailles District.
Kane is a nine year old German Shepherd that has been assigned to Sgt. Stephen Wheeles since the beginning of Kane’s career. In 2007, Sgt. Wheeles and Kane attended a 14 week K-9 school under Master Trainer Bob Compton of the Allen County, Indiana Sheriff’s Department. Kane was certified as a narcotics and patrol dog. Upon graduation of K-9 school, Kane was assigned to the Seymour District. Upon the closing of the Seymour Post in 2010, Kane was transferred to the Versailles District where Sgt. Wheeles and Kane continued to work primarily Jackson, Jennings, and Bartholomew Counties until his recent retirement.
During the course of Kane’s career, he was responsible for seizing hundreds of pounds of illegal drugs and capturing numerous wanted suspects. Kane also assisted federal, state, and local law enforcement with numerous investigations resulting in the prosecution of hundreds of individuals involved in criminal activity in southern Indiana. Above all, Kane loved to conduct programs and demonstrations for local schools, businesses, and other organizations.
In his retirement, Kane will continue to live with Sgt. Wheeles and Sgt. Wheeles’ family at their rural Jackson County home.
