Avoid Scams which aim to frighten the receiver into paying alleged back-taxes under threat of imminent arrest.
A number of Identity theft scams have been reported in our area. Residents report calls from individuals claiming to be I.R.S. representatives who demand immediate payment under the threat of arrest and other sanctions. These individuals may sound very convincing to the unsuspecting public. Especially at risk are senior citizens who may be more easily frightened into complying with the demands of thieves.
If a caller notifies you that you owe back taxes and that you face imminent arrest, it is a fraud. If you have any questions about your tax status, there are a number of resources you can rely on. Don't be afraid to contact the I.R.S, yourself. There are also online forms for your use. Among them:
