CONGRATULATIONS Del Valle High School!!!!!!!!
On Thursday, October 29, 2015 Del Valle High School will be recognized at the “Dreammakers and Risktakers” Awards Luncheon for its community service bicycle program. Working in conjunction with the Livermore Police Department, Del Valle High School students are able to enroll in a class elective where they refurbish bicycles for needy children. For example, with the recent fires, many bicycles have already been donated to fire victims. The class elective not only gives back to the community, it also provides job skills and it allows students to earn valuable community service hours.
On average, the Livermore Police Department collects upwards of 8 to 10 abandoned bicycles per month. Once the bicycles are collected, they are held within our property room for up to 90 days while our property clerk attempts to locate and contact the bicycle’s owner. After 90 days, the bicycles are deemed abandoned. Given the limited storage space, in the past the Livermore Police Department would gather the bicycles and sell them off at auction for a profit. However, the gain was minimal and it was in our community’s interest to simply donate them to the bicycle program at Del Valle High School. The Livermore Police Department has been donating bicycles to the school for nearly a year.
Another great example of community collaboration! Without the help of all, many would not be successful.
