CRIME ALERT - Mystery Shopper scam
A Cornwall resident responded to an on-line ad for a "mystery shopper". She received a packet of information & instructions containing a legitimate looking Capital One Bank cashier's check in the amount of $2550.00
The instructions directed the resident to cash the check, complete the "mystery shopper" duties at a local Wal-Mart (spending up to $70.00 for merchandise), then wire transfer some of the remaining funds totaling $2230.00 to other "mystery shoppers so they could complete their duties.
The resident recognized this as a scam and contacted the police department. Had she cashed the check, and wire transferred the funds, it would have been a few days until the bank realized the check was fraudulent and she would have been victimized for $2230.00.
Multiple times weekly the police department receives reports of frauds and scams that occur via mail, telephone, or internet. In most cases our residents recognize the attempts for what they are - scams and frauds, but we've had some cases where residents have lost tens of thousands of dollars.
Residents are reminded to be vigilant in dealing with mail/telephone/internet offers, especially those where this is any mention of wire transferring funds or loading money onto "money-pak" cards.
