Breaking and entering investigations
The Columbia Township Police Department recently completed an investigation of a burglary that occurred on Bedford Drive, on October 19, 2015.
A 31 year old Somerset Township resident was developed as a suspect, and on Wednesday, October 21, Shane William Hummel was arrested by the Michigan State Police, on a warrant for an unrelated (but similar) crime from the City of Jackson.
On that date, Hummel was interviewed by Sgt. Jay Niles at the Michigan State Police Post in Jackson. Following obtaining his statement, he was lodged at the Jackson County Jail on probable cause related to the Columbia Township burglary, as well as the outstanding felony warrant.
The report was forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office, and on Thursday, October 22, Hummel was charged with one count of “Home Invasion-Second Degree”, a 15 year felony. He has since been arraigned, and is currently being held on $25,000 bond.
Part of the property from this burglary has been located, and return to the victim is pending.
On an unrelated crime Columbia Township Police are seeking information related to a burglary at Callahan’s on Main St. in Brooklyn, which is believed to have occurred after 10:30 P.M. on October 19, 2015, and 7:30 A.M. the morning of October 20, 2015.
In this burglary, two televisions were recovered that were believed to have been stolen, and it was following this recovery (on Chicago St. in Brooklyn) that the crime was discovered at Callahan’s.
Taken in this burglary, besides the televisions, was alcohol and food.
