On October 29, 2015 Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Max Fernandez was honored as Park’s Bureau Deputy of the Year for his professionalism and exemplary service to the citizens of Los Angeles County. He received his certificate from, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor Don Knabe and Los Angeles County Assistant Sheriff Todd Rogers.
Deputy Max Fernandez is a 17 year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He began his path towards becoming a law enforcement officer by attending the Rio Hondo Police Academy, where he graduated in 1997. He was hired by the Sheriff’s Department in 1998 and was assigned to work at the Men’s Central Jail. In 2001 Deputy Fernandez moved on to work patrol assignments at Compton, Century and East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Stations. He left his patrol assignment in 2007 and was then assigned to the Safe Streets Bureau for four years. For the past four years, Deputy Fernandez has been assigned to the Parks Bureau – East Zone.
During his tenure at the Parks Bureau, Deputy Fernandez has worked both patrol and detective assignments. He has been responsible for patrolling and investigating crimes that occur in Los Angeles County Parks, including those located in Hacienda Heights, and Rowland Heights. During the past year, Max has made over 70 arrests, including the arrest of a known gang member responsible for vandalizing the art work at the new Hacienda Heights Community Center.
Deputy Fernandez is not only an exemplary law enforcement officer, but someone who is committed to enriching and protecting the wellbeing of children and families that utilize County Parks in the communities the Department serves. In addition to his daily, proactive policing of the parks, he has volunteered and took on the additional responsibility of being an instructor for both the RADKIDS and BRAVE programs. Both programs are designed to teach age appropriate safety lessons to children in kindergarten through sixth grade. The lessons include teaching verbal and physical skills as a self-defense against sexual abuse, violence, and abduction.
Deputy Fernandez enjoys spending time with his girlfriend Tammy, and his two stepchildren, Augustus and Isabella. Due to Deputy Fernandez’ dedication and hard work, the parks he patrols are truly a safer place for all.
