DISADVANTAGED FAMILIES MAY BE CHALLENGED TO RECEIVE TOYS FOR TOTS 2015
According to the Tots For Tots website; www.toysfortots.org applicants desiring to get information on how to apply for Toys For Tots are asked to contact their Local Toys For Tots office or call a phone number that never gives a response if a message is left. Although a contact person is listed on the Toys For Tots website, they cannot be contacted directly where a real person will respond. Furthermore, there is no Toys For Tots office listed for zip codes consisting predominantly of disadvantaged Hispanic and African American families:
48201, 48202, 48203, 48204, 48206, 48208, 48209, 48210, 49216, 48217, 48221, 48226, 48238, 48239 -Non-Serviced Area's
Community nonprofit organizations who assist disadvantaged African American families with applying for toys For Tots are met with the same communications issues with Toys For Tots.
Hispanic families with the greatest need in applying for the Toys For Tots program due to language barriers are also severely impacted. Due to the volume of disadvantaged families seeking to apply for the program, the requirement for manually submitting applications online
in effect will largely reduce the number of prospective applicants this year.
Approximately 95% of all toys collected and donated to disadvantaged families in the city and southwest Detroit come from Corporate Sponsors In the downtown Detroit business district, with less than 5% of the total support coming directly from the Toys For Tots Foundation. However, Corporate Sponsors desiring to host large Toys For Tots drives and PR Events are being left idle while encountering serious communications problems as they attempt to obtain Toys For Tots bins and other materials and services to support their efforts.
The concern is that the aggregate pool of potential toys that otherwise would have been donated would be severely hindered. Intended beneficiaries of the Toys For Tots program in the most distressed areas of the city (discriminately those in the African America and Hispanic communities) are on course to possibly receive no toys at all this Christmas.
