The Newberry County Coroner's Office reports that a late afternoon traffic collision has claimed the life of one man. Chief Deputy Coroner Lewis Lee said that 59 year old John Ma (pronounced May) of Glendale, N.Y. was killed instantly when the vehicle he was driving crossed the center portion of the roadway striking an on-coming vehicle. The collision occurred at approximately 4:25 p.m. near the intersection of S.C. Hwy. 213 and Broad River Road in the Pomaria area of Newberry County. Chief Deputy Coroner Lee advised that Mr. Ma was wearing a seat belt and was alone in the vehicle. It is reported that the victim was in the area as a contract employee of the nearby nuclear station. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to an area hospital for non life threatening injuries. The collision remains under investigation by the Coroner's Office and the S.C. Highway Patrol.
