El Nino Preparation
Preparing for El Niño
El Niño is a tropical climate event, which pushes warm ocean temperatures into the opposite direction to the east and towards the ocean surface. The increase in air temperatures generally creates heat waves, droughts, and severe rain storms. Some forecasters are claiming this year’s El Niño will be the strongest in 65 years. Many are hoping the increased rain will relieve California from its drought stricken path. Of course each El Niño is different and one never really knows what it will bring. Some El Niño’s have been dry with little rain at all.
The best defense against El Niño is to prepare for the worst with heavy rain and wind. Emergency crews will be ready to assist and do all they can, but resources can be exhausted quickly during a major event. Residents should prepare with a minimum of 3 days of food, water, and emergency supplies for each person in their family. Homes and properties should be inspected and repaired to prevent leaks, down trees, or other potential damages.
