The Arlington Police Department received a major break in a horrific crime that occurred on June 10, 2012 in the 3600 block of Waverly Drive. Officers initially responded to check the welfare status of two residents who live at this location. During this check, officers located the deceased bodies of Long Nguyen and Huong Ly. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner ruled that both victims died as a result of a homicide. The department conducted interviews with multiple news outlets in order to solicit tips from the public to solve this egregious case and bring closure to their family. Unfortunately, despite several tips related to this case, the investigation went cold and no suspect was ever identified.

During the crime scene processing, detectives recovered DNA evidence from what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette found at the location. This item was processed and sent to a laboratory for further analysis and testing. The DNA profile from the cigarette was entered into the Combined DNA Index System, also known as CODIS.

Detectives received information in mid-October 2015 that a routine DNA database search that was run by the CODIS laboratory identified a possible match of a suspect. This suspect, now an adult, was located and arrested for a parole violation. The department obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s saliva for further comparison purposes. During this secondary analysis, detectives were notified on November 2, 2015 that the saliva sample taken from the suspect matched the DNA sample on the cigarette paper that was collected at the initial crime scene.

An arrest warrant was secured on November 24, 2015 for Capital Murder with initial bond set at $250,000. The suspect remains in the Tarrant County Jail. Due to the fact that the suspect committed this offense as a 16-year-old juvenile, the name cannot be released under state law.

“The meticulous crime scene processing that occurred highlights how important every little detail is in a significant crime scene and the role of DNA testing that has afforded us this opportunity to bring much needed closure to the victim’s family,” said Police Chief Will Johnson. “This is the second case since October that DNA analysis has solved a murder case in our community.”

Couple discovered deceased in home after welfare check

The Arlington Police Department is asking for the public’s help identifying the person or people who could be responsible for the deaths of a married couple found in their apartment early this morning. Arlington homicide detectives are investigating the deaths of a man and woman, who are in their 70s and 60s respectively. Officers were dispatched to a welfare check in the 3600 block of Waverly Drive at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 10, 2012. A family member called 911 after finding a window open at the couple’s home. Officers arrived, entered the apartment, and found the husband and wife inside the home. Although the deaths are being investigated as homicides, the cause and manner of death have not yet been verified. That information will be provided by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner once a determination has been made.

The names of the husband and wife will also be released by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner, once their identities are officially confirmed and next of kin have been notified. It is early in this investigation and detectives are looking at the possible reasons anyone would want to harm these two.

This afternoon, the Crime Scene and Homicide units continue to gather evidence and details about the last moments of this couple’s life. Doing so could lead officers to the person or people responsible for their deaths.
