On November 21, 2015, an elderly woman called the Campbell Police Department to report that her checkbook and prescription eye glasses were stolen. The items were taken from her unattended mobility scooter while it was parked in the underground parking lot of her residence on Winchester Blvd. The victim reported that shortly thereafter, she was contacted by her bank who informed her that someone had attempted to cash one of her personal checks.
Officers obtained an ID card that had been left at the bank along with video surveillance and still photos of the suspects and their vehicle. Officers identified a potential suspect and went to her home in San Jose. Violet Loza, 32 years old, was contacted and taken into custody. Meanwhile, a male at the home who resembled a subject on the surveillance video from the bank was identified and found to be on probation.
Officers conducted a probation search and found Rudy Escobar, 28 years old, of San Jose to be in possession of the victim’s stolen checkbook and her prescription eyeglasses. Additionally, an auto glass repair company was outside the home to repair windows on the suspect’s vehicle. A check for over $1,000 was made out to the company with the stolen check book. The search yielded numerous bags of possible stolen mail, driver’s licenses, social security cards and debit cards belonging to other people.
Loza and Escobar were arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on numerous felony charges including elder financial abuse, possession of bank account numbers, personal identification theft, forgery, conspiracy and a narcotics violation.
