Intoxicated Female Driver Arrested After Covina Police Officers Deploy Spike Strip to End Pursuit
On November 30, 2015 at approximately 6:48 PM, Covina Police Officers were dispatched to a radio call of a possible intoxicated driver in the area of Azusa Avenue and Arrow Highway in the City of Covina.
Upon arriving to the area, Covina Officers located the identified vehicle traveling through a trailer park in the 1000 block of N. Azusa. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle; however, the female driver failed to stop as required and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit traveled on city streets for over 6 miles and reached speeds of up to 70 MPH through residential streets and the Covina Downtown area. During the pursuit the driver failed to stop for stop signs and drove on the wrong side of the road at times. As the suspect vehicle approached the intersection of Hollenbeck and Cypress, Covina Officers were able to successfully deploy a “Spike Strip” and safely disabled the pursued vehicle. After the vehicle was disabled, the driver was taken into custody without any further incident. There were no injuries or accidents attributed to the pursuit.
The driver of the vehicle, Joyce Nancy Vasquez, is a 56 year old resident of Covina and was arrested on charges VC 2800.2 - Evading a Police Officer and VC 23152(A) - Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol. She is currently being housed at the Covina Police Department with a $75,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at Citrus Superior Court on 12/02/15.
