Detectives with the Portsmouth Police Department Major Crimes Unit are investigating the death of a female this afternoon. Just before 12:45 p.m. police communications received a telephone call requesting that officers check the welfare of a female inside an apartment in the 3600 block of Gateway Drive. After arriving at the home, officers found a female victim inside, suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. Medics responded and pronounced the female deceased at the scene.

At this time there is no clear motive in this case. Detectives worked diligently throughout the afternoon and are now classifying this death as a homicide. As a result of their investigative efforts, they have also identified a person of interest that they believe has vital information in this case. Detectives are searching for 52 year-old Darryl Faine of Portsmouth. No further information is available in this case.
