Advisory

KCSO Crime Prevention Unit offers tips to residents on preventing package/delivery theft this holiday season.

Along with merriment and cheer, the holidays also bring with them an increase in retail shopping across the nation. Much of this shopping is done online, with packages being delivered to the homes of those ordering gifts. Do not fall victim to package theft this holiday season. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit would like to provide retail shoppers and merchants with tips on ways to safeguard packages and ensure that they reach their destination.

1. Many carriers give in-store pickup options or you can schedule a time for drop off.
2. Request a signature required delivery.
3. Contact the Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit to start-up or revitalize a Neighborhood Watch program. Work with your neighbors to know who is at home. Ask neighbors who are home during the day to pick-up your boxes for you if you aren't home.
4. Have delivery packages sent to the address of a family member or close friend who is home to receive packages.
5. Consider getting a P.O. Box.
6. If living in an apartment complex, ask your apartment manager if your package can be delivered to the manager's office.
7. Have your package delivered to your place of work.
8. Request that the merchant provide you with a tracking number, so you can check the status of your package and be aware of when it should be delivered.
9. Inquire if the merchant has a “ship-to-store” option.

Remember; if you are the victim of theft always report it to your local law enforcement agency! Residents residing within the county are encouraged to call (661) 861-3110 to report any kind of theft. Please contact the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit at (661)391-7559 or email [email protected] with any additional questions or for more information about preventing crime during the holiday season.
