Driver Has Medical Incident, Causing Crash and Death
Lake County-At approximately 9:00 a.m., this Tuesday, December 8, 2015, morning, Sergeant Lee Wright responded to a two vehicle crash on I-80/94 east bound at the 5.4 mile marker (this is just east of Cline Avenue).
Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 GMC Envoy driven by Glenn Coppage, 52 of Valparaiso, was east bound on I-80/94, driving erratically, when the Envoy went off the road to the south and hit the concrete barrier wall. The Envoy went back onto the roadway across two lanes where it hit a 2003 Jeep in the rear, driven by Donald Frederick, of Ottawa, Illinois. The Jeep went off the roadway and hit the barrier wall on the inner shoulder causing it to flip onto its side.
The Envoy after hitting the Jeep went back across southeast off the roadway and struck the sound barrier wall off the outer shoulder. Coppage was unresponsive at this time and Good Sanitarians removed him from the Envoy and began to perform CPR on him until EMS personnel arrived.
Coppage was transported to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary by Hammond EMS where he was pronounced dead.
It is believed Coppage had a medical incident leading up to the crash; an autopsy is pending. Family has been notified.
Frederick was not injured.
