Elkhart County Deputy Involved in Crash Sunday
Elkhart County – Sunday afternoon a deputy with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department was involved in a personal injury crash on Greene Rd. at the intersection of US 33. The accident happened shortly after 1:30 p.m.
Deputy Justin Yoder, 36, was on duty at the time driving his patrol car north bound on Greene Rd. approaching the intersection of US 33. Purportedly Yoder had looked down briefly, diverting his attention from the roadway, and when he looked back up he noticed that traffic had come to a stop at the light. Yoder attempted to avoid hitting a stopped Honda SUV by swerving but clipped the rear end of the vehicle causing it to role onto its side.
The driver of the Honda, Maria Flora Vazquez-Galvez, 47, of Elkhart, suffered minor injuries in the crash. The four passengers in her vehicle also suffered minor injuries in the accident. They were all taken to IU Health Goshen Hospital where they were treated and later released. Yoder was not injured in the crash.
