Besides being an Association that protects our residents and visitors, we also provide public information. This is one of the most important bits of information that we can provide to our residents and it has to do with a visitor.
Did you know that NORAD started this tradition accidentally? Yup, A Sears advertisement for kids to call Santa on a special “hotline” included a misprinted telephone number so instead of reaching old Saint Nick, the number hooked the kids through to the then CONAD Commander-in-Chief’s operations “hotline.” Colonel Harry Shoup, the Director of Operations, received the first “Santa” call and had his staff check radar data to see if there was any indication of Santa making his way south from the North Pole and actually, there were signs of Santa and the military gave the children who called in were given an update on Santa’s position. We are not sure if this is the first time that the military gave out classified information to children but they have been doing it since December 24, 1955..... The military also tracks Santa's travels for public safety dispatchers who also relay that information to our public, but if it wasn't for NORAD, we wouldn't be able to provide it to you. So, thank you to our military for everything you do, and for providing this very important service.
