The driver/victim in yesterday's fatal crash in Steuben County identified
The driver/victim in yesterday's fatal crash on I69 near the Ashley exit has been identified by investigating Sheriff Deputies and Steuben County Coronor Bill Harter as Marion Garrison, age 68, of Fayette, Ohio.
On December 28, 2015 at approximately 12:39 PM the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal crash on I-69 near the 340 MM.
Glen Maltman, age 53, of Belding, MI was southbound in the driving lane of I-69 driving a 2014 Freightliner tractor/trailer. Lynette Maltman, age 54, of Belding, MI was asleep in the sleeper portion of the tractor.
Marion Garrison, age 68, of Fayette, Ohio was southbound in the driving lane of I-69 driving a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis.
Garrison started to lose control on the ice covered railroad bridge. Maltman was following the Garrison and observed that he had lost control of his vehicle. Maltman moved over into the passing lane to avoid a collision with the Grand Marquis. Garrison struck the guardrail and then spun around into the passing lane where Maltman struck the passenger side of the vehicle.
Garrison was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner from blunt force trauma. The driver was unrestrained and airbags did not deploy.
Maltman was uninjured in the crash. Lynette Maltman suffered minor leg pain and was transported to Cameron Hospital by Steuben County EMS.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The crash is still under investigation.
Assisting at the scene were Angola Police, Ashley Police, Indiana State Police, Indiana Motor Carrier, Ashley Fire/Rescue, Steuben County Coroner, and Indiana Department of Transportation.
