Voluntary Evacuation Recommended
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
(Jackson County, Illinois) Jackson County Chairman, John S. Rendleman, is recommending voluntary evacuation of residents in the impacted flood plain area. This recommendation is made to prepare for record high waters on the Mississippi River later this week. The current crest forecast is for 49.7 feet at the Chester gauge on late Friday morning, January 1st,New Year's Day. This is a slight reduction from yesterday’s forecast of 49.9 feet. Officials are monitoring the situation and continue to prepare for potential threats to county residents. It is advised to take precautions and prepare before floods happen. There is work being done to shore up levees and everyone is encouraged to stay off levee roads unless on official business.
Residents needing assistance with evacuation or sheltering should call 684-3137. Anyone evacuating is encouraged to notify the Sheriff’s Department at 684-6773 to be included on house watch patrols in the area. A request form is available at the Sheriff’s Department and online at www.JacksonCountyEMA.com.
There are road closures throughout the county and these are updated twice daily at www.JacksonCountyEMA.com . Flooded roads could have significant damage hidden by floodwaters. NEVER drive through floodwaters or on flooded roads. The National Weather Service now warns anyone who comes to a flooded roadway, “Turn around… don’t drown!” If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground. Water only two feet deep can float away most automobiles.
Any person or group wishing to volunteer for the flood fighting efforts, can call the Jackson County Volunteer Coordinator at 618-534-9212. Please note that if you are volunteering, you must prepare to be self-sufficient with respect to adequate clothing, gloves, food, etc.
There will be a media briefing today at 3:00 p.m. at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in Murphysboro.
