The mountain areas in Kern County are experiencing low snow levels for the first time in several years. With reports of low snow levels, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens and visitors to Kern County to visit snow areas responsibly.

The Tehachapi area has grown over the last several years and the majority of land in the Tehachapi area is private property. This has resulted in numerous complaints in years past from land owners due to trespassing, vandalism, and illegal dumping. The Tehachapi Mountain Park is not set up for snow activities and the park itself will only accommodate 10-15 cars. The road leading to the park is steep and often closed due to hazardous conditions created by ice and snow. Parking is not allowed on this road, and vehicles may be forced to turn around with no alternative parking except on private property. Citations will be issued to those who violate the property rights of legal owners, and illegally parked vehicles may be towed.

Frazier Park has public land areas that are owned by the US Forest Service. Prior to traveling to the area contact should be made to determine areas that are open to the public. The US Forest Service Frazier Park Office can be reached at 661-245-3731. Although the Frazier Park area has land open to the public, trespassing, vandalism, and illegal dumping often occurs on private land in this area also. Violators may be issued citations.

Additionally, if traveling in the snow consider the following precautions:

• Dress properly for cold conditions.
• Drive slower in areas with ice and snow.
• Make sure your vehicle is full of gas.
• Be careful on bridges, ramps, and elevated structures which freeze before the roadway.
• Take supplies, such as food, water, flashlights, extra batteries, a first aid kit, a battery charger, blankets, and extra clothing.
• Take a cell phone and cell charger.

If you choose to participate in snow related activities, please do so safely and within the law. Act responsibly and respect the rights of residents that live in areas that receive snow.
