Outdoor Warning Siren testing today at noon. Sirens may sound for up to three minutes.
The City of Van will be testing the outdoor warning sirens at noon on the second Tuesday of the month. The sirens are radio activated and may sound for up to three minutes.
The outdoor warning system is designed to warn those outside of structures to take shelter during an emergency. It is not intended as a primary warning for those indoors. For your safety and protection, be sure to have multiple ways of receiving notifications. Many rely on social media, forgetting that in severe weather internet and cell phone service can and has in the recent past been interrupted. It is recommended that you have a weather radio with a battery backup.
The current system in Van consists of four radio activated sirens. They can be activated from the Fire and Police station, or from several of the fire trucks. There are new sirens at the Junior High on South Oak and at the Community Center. These new models rotate around their axis, providing a change in pitch of the siren tone. They have a battery backup system. The other two sirens are located near the intersection of Walnut and Virginia, and near the City Park.
