Tarp on Roadway Contributes to I-65 Crash near Seymour
Jackson County-This morning, at approximately 10:15 AM, the Indiana State Police responded to a rollover crash on I-65 near the 49 mile marker just south of exit 50 near Seymour. The crash, which involved one vehicle, caused two of the five occupants to be hospitalized.
The initial investigation by Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, indicated a blue 2002 Ford Explorer, driven by Jeffrey T. Morrison, age 23, North Vernon, IN was traveling southbound on I-65 near the 49 mile marker. It is believed that a large tarp lying in the lane of travel caused Morrison to swerve to the other lane. Morrison then lost control of the vehicle. It is believed the vehicle rolled several times into the median of I-65.
Morrison sustained injuries and was transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour where he was expected to be treated and released. A front seat passenger in the vehicle, Trevor M. Thain, age 23, Fort Wayne, IN was initially entrapped in the vehicle. Upon being freed from the vehicle, he was transported to Schneck Medical Center before being flown to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis with multiple injuries. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Three other passengers, Cassie M. Garrard, age 24, Crown Point, IN, Lyndi A. Martin, age 21, Lafayette, IN, and Madeline C. Miller, age 23, Fort Wayne, IN all suffered minor injuries and refused treatment.
The vehicle that possibly lost the tarp was not located. The investigation is ongoing.
Sgt. Wheeles was assisted at the scene by other troopers from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Jackson County EMS, Seymour Fire Department, and 31 Wrecker.
