Southern Pines Police Department Announces: January as “Stalking Awareness Month”

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
January 21, 2016

Southern Pines Police Department
Announces:
January as “Stalking Awareness Month”

Governor Pat McCrory proclaimed January as “Stalking Awareness Month” in North Carolina. In the United States annually, 7.5 million people fall victim to stalking with the majority of the victims being stalked by someone they know. Stalking is a growing issue within our state that causes issues within our workplaces and communities. Victims often lose time from work and experience serious psychological distress reducing their freedom of a normal life. There is a dire need to increase public awareness about the nature, criminality and potential lethality of stalking.

Charles Campbell, Captain with the Southern Pines Police Department and Chair of the North Carolina Domestic Violence Commission Stated: “Stalking is a crime that we as society don’t fully understand and cannot comprehend the effects it has on victims unless we, or someone we love, becomes a victim of this horrible crime. The only way we can support current victims and reduce the number of future victims is to educate ourselves and act upon this knowledge.”

The Southern Pines Police Department joins Governor Pat McCrory, the North Carolina Council for Women and the North Carolina Domestic Violence Commission in its efforts to increase awareness to combat the serious realities of stalking.
