Winter Storm Jonas UPDATE
Winter weather continues to impact our area and is expected to continue through this evening and into the early hours of Sunday morning. The wintry mix that has been impacting Long Beach Island since early this morning has increased flooding in areas which are low-lying and usually problematic. We are experiencing tidal flooding on bayside street ends, Barnegat Avenue, and sections of Central Avenue; additionally, areas on Long Beach Boulevard (especially in the shoulders) are flooded. High winds continue to bombard the town, causing cable, phone, and electric lines to become low-hanging and/or knocked down completely. Downed electric wires and flooding make hidden dangers that you may not be expecting. If you see any downed lines, DO NOT APPROACH OR TOUCH THEM; treat all downed or low hanging lines as if they are energized. Call in any low-hanging or downed wires (whether electric, cable, or phone) to our officers at 609-494-8121. Additionally, we urge all residents to STAY INDOORS until the storm has passed and all major hazards can be identified and mitigated; YOUR safety is one of our biggest concerns. The next two high tides on the bayside that may present moderate to significant flood issues will occur approximately tonight at 10PM and tomorrow at 10AM. With snow still falling, the water levels have the potential to be higher than this morning’s flooding.
