Advisory

Flood warnings continue through tomorrow

From Dan Skeldon of the AC Press..

TIDAL FLOODING UPDATE: AREAS OF MAJOR FLOODING THIS EVENING, BUT NOT RECORD LEVELS LIKE SOME SAW THIS MORNING
Coastal flood warnings continue through Sunday morning's high tide, so coastal residents should prepare for two more rounds of tidal flooding.
However, I'm still thinking the next two high tides won't reach the height from this morning. There's three things that should help us out a little.
1) The winds have shifted north, which is not as bad as a northeast wind in terms of locking water in the back bays.
2) This evening's high tide is astronomically about a foot lower than this morning's high tide. What does that mean? Well there's two high tides every day, storm or no storm. And every day, one of those two high tides is naturally lower than the other. As luck would have it, this evening's is the lower of the two. That should help things a bit tonight.
3) The storm surge, or amount of extra water on top of the natural high tide, has come down a bit since this morning/midday. The attached graphics show that. This morning, Atlantic City had a surge of 4 feet, noted by the green line on the graphic. It has since come down to 3 feet. Again, every foot helps.
In Cape May, the surge was as high as 4-5 feet around midday. Now it's down to 3.5 feet. Again, that's an improvement.
BOTTOM LINE: Areas of major tidal flooding are again expected this evening along the South Jersey shore. But for the above three reasons, the water levels from this morning should NOT be reached. Nevertheless, shore residents should prepare for another round of tidal flooding tonight, and one more tomorrow morning. But by tomorrow morning, hopefully winds will have shifted northwest by then, and things improve a bit more. But let's take them one high tide at a time.
