ISP Investigating Fatal Crash Following Pursuit in Huntington County ***UPDATE***
(Huntington County, IN)-The Indiana State Police is continuing its investigation into a single vehicle fatal crash which occurred following a vehicle pursuit by Huntington County police late last night.
Preliminary investigation by Sergeant Tom Merkling indicated that at approximately 11:15 p.m., a 2008 Dodge pickup truck driven by 46 year old Larry Von Huey of rural Huntington had been stopped by a deputy from the Huntington County Sheriff Department for multiple moving violations on westbound US 24 at State Road 9 north. During the course of the stop, the focus turned towards a possible driving under the influence incident.
At some point during his contact with Huey, who was now outside of his vehicle, a physical altercation ensued and the deputy was allegedly pushed by Huey who returned to his vehicle in an attempt to flee. The deputy tried to physically stop Huey, but had to disengage as the truck began to speed away. Huey drove west on US 24 to Flaxmill Road where he continued west to Rangeline Road. It was at this intersection that Huey stopped the vehicle and his passenger, a 44 year old woman from Andrews got out.
The vehicle then continued north on Rangeline Road for approximately one mile before it left the east side of the road, struck a large tree head-on and caught fire. Huey was pronounced dead at the scene by the Huntington County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy was conducted this morning in Fort Wayne and those results will be released by the Huntington County Coroner’s Office. This investigation is still ongoing.
Assisting with the investigation are the Huntington Police Department, Huntington County Coroner’s Office and Parkview Huntington EMS.
