GCSO Deputies searched for missing 72-yr old man, later found deceased in wooded area near his home

On Wednesday, January 27, 2016 shortly before 7:00 p.m., Greene County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a report of a missing person in the 2800 block of West Oxbow Street in southwestern Greene County. Deputies learned 72-year old Phil Padgett who was last seen at his home at 7:30 a.m. had left a note intending suicide. Greene County Deputies and Battlefield Fire personnel searched the densely wooded area through the night utilizing night vision equipment. After daylight this morning, additional resources were dispatched to include personnel, all-terrain vehicles, the Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, MSHP aircraft and scent-tracking dogs. Prior to the arrival of some of these resources, Mr. Padgett was located deceased by a Deputy. Mr. Padgett was located high upon a bluff, concealed in the wooded terrain near his neighborhood.

"Our Deputies located the body of a deceased male who we identified as Mr. Padgett," states Sheriff Jim Arnott. "At this point of our investigation, there does not appear to be any signs of foul play."

GCSO Detectives continue to investigate Mr. Padgett's death and will be working with the Greene County Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.
