Newberry Coroner will not seek 3rd Term
Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton has announced that he will not seek a third term as Newberry County Coroner. Newton was elected Coroner in November 2008 and will complete his 2nd term in January, 2017. In his first year in Office, Coroner Newton was awarded the prestigious "Sue Townsend Award" by the S.C. Coroner's Association. This award is voted on by all Coroner's statewide and is given annually to the Coroner who most demonstrates professionalism, vision, and integrity. Newton was also selected from candidates throughout the country to attend a select nationwide training class in New York City to study Medicolegal Death Investigation. This was awarded to him two consecutive years, one for basic certification and the next for advanced certification. Prior to serving as Coroner, Newton served as a State Trooper for 25 years, spending his final 12 years in Newberry County as a Corporal then Sergeant. Newton says; "after much prayer and consideration, I have decided that this will be my final term to serve as Coroner for Newberry County. It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve in this capacity. This has truly been an incredible journey of love, hope, and faith. I will always treasure the trust and confidence you have shown in me. I would like to thank my wife Robyn, my family, and my friends for your support and love over the years. Without you I would not have been successful in my efforts." Coroner Newton has been married for 39 years to Robyn Frye Newton and has two adult sons Brad ( wife Ashley) and Brett (wife Jessica), and three grandchildren. He is a member of Central United Methodist Church, the SC Coroner's Association, The International Association of Coroner's and Medical Examiners, and the Newberry County Law Enforcement Officer's Association.
