Police Departments Work Together to Getting Missing Person Home

Lowell-Indiana State Police (ISP) Corporal Dan Avitia received a call, yesterday evening, from a relative of a Missing Person that lived in Gurnee, Illinois.  The relative was a daughter of an Irene Henley, 92 of Gary.  Her daughter had made a Missing Person report to Gary Police Department after her mother left a friend’s home in Gary around noon, February 2, 2016.

Henley’s daughter wanted to know if we (ISP) had any contact with her mother or the vehicle she was driving.  Avitia checked our district and the Indiana Toll Road and was able to determine that we had not had any contact with her.  Avitia was able to provide telephone numbers to local hospitals, police, and county departments to her.  ISP regional radio also made a broadcast with the mother’s name, description, and vehicle information.

Later that evening Avitia received a call from the daughter advising that Henley had been located in LaPorte County near the town of Lacrosse.  Henley had crashed her vehicle and ran off the roadway near a residence.  Henley began honking her horn and a Good Samaritan assisted her and called the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department.  Laporte County Sheriff Deputy Neil Lachmund arrive to assist Henley.

Henley was not injured and her vehicle was towed.  The family did not have the ability to get Henley from LaPorte back home to Gary.  The weather at this time consisted of heavy fog and low visibility.

Deputy Lachmund met up with Senior Trooper Lawrence McFarrin at State Road 421 and U.S. 6 and McFarrin transported Henley to her home in Gary.

Lieutenant Terry Gose, District Commander of the Lowell Post, stated, “The coordination with LaPorte County Sheriff Department and the Indiana State Police helped to get a family member home safely where she belonged.”
