TELEPHONE SCAMMERS TARGETING BLISSFIELD RESIDENTS
The Blissfield Police Department has received numerous complaints from residents that are receiving phone calls from unknown person(s) claiming to be government agents. In some cases, the callers will claim that the resident owes back taxes and has a short period of time to resolve the matter (usually less than an hour) before the caller claims that the police will be sent to arrest the resident. The caller may demand that the resident either provide credit card information or obtain a cash card from either a gas station or party store and call the scammer back with the card information.
Residents are advised that the U.S. Department of Treasury nor any other legitimate law enforcement agency will conduct business in this manner.
As with any suspicious phone call, if you think that the call may be legitimate, you can advise the caller that you will contact the company, financial institution, utility, or government agency directly to inquire about any issues that the caller is presenting to you. If the caller is legitimate, they will understand and cooperate as they provide you with account information. Once you hang up, you should retrieve a phone number independently from a bill or from an independent source such as the internet or the phone book. Do not call any number provided to you by the caller if you suspect the caller is a scammer.
As with any phone call, DO NOT provide any account information to a caller. Many times the scammer will want to "verify" your account information. If they are a legitimate caller, they will provide you with the account numbers.
As with any suspicious phone activity, please report the activity to your phone carrier.
