Covina PD will be conducting a DUI Checkpoint within the city limits on February 20, 2016 starting at 6 PM.
The Covina Police Department, through a grant from the California Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control, will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on February 20, 2016 between the hours of 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM at an undisclosed location in the City of Covina.
This checkpoint will be dedicated to the memory of Dustin Ray Travis-Plummer who was killed by a drunk driver on December 15th, 2006. Dustin was only 22 years old and was an aspiring actor. Dustin was killed on the 210 freeway, only miles from his home in Rancho Cucamonga. While Dustin’s free spirit moves on, he will be deeply missed by his parents Gary and Sue; his sisters, Brandie and Morgan; and his brother’s, Gary III and Nathan.
The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints are a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely. DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.
Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes. Drugs which may impair driving not only include illegal narcotics, but many prescription drugs, marijuana, and even some over-the-counter medications.
Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs; if we catch you driving buzzed, drunk or impaired by drugs, you will go to jail. Remember, everyone is encouraged to help keep our roadways safe; Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911!
