POLICE/FIRE TACTICAL RESPONSE TRAINING

Between Feb. 18 and Feb. 26, 2016, the Corona Police Department (CPD) and Corona Fire Department (CFD) will be conducting training for all of their sworn staff on the tactical response to Active Shooter type incidents.

The integration of police and fire departments in response to tactical response rescue and/or active shooter incidents greatly enhances the outcome(s) and survivability of any victims caught in such an incident. First responders face the threat of force as part of their daily jobs. Active shooter training incorporates Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel into the response model; entering a relatively dangerous environment under force protection from law enforcement in order to provide immediate care to the wounded. The primary objective of such an entry is to provide care and/or immediate physical rescue to victims that may otherwise perish due to lack of immediate treatment.

Tactical medical and evacuation gear utilized in the training and response for Corona Fire Department EMS personnel has been purchased with funds provided by the Department of Homeland Security, which is dedicated grant funding for law enforcement and terrorism prevention throughout the country.

Last year, CPD and CFD began training with this approach. This year’s training reinforces how police and fire will handle these dangerous and high profile events. The training drill will be held on an industrial site in the city that is currently unoccupied. Police and Fire explorers as well as additional volunteers will be role players for the scenario. Other Police and Fire agencies from within the region will also be participating in the training.
Creating a training event to include the entire staff of two separate departments is a huge undertaking, but the dedicated partnership between CPD and CFD has made this on-going joint training a huge success for the City of Corona.

The Corona Police and Fire Departments wish to express thanks to the Dairy Farmers of America, Monster Energy, Miguel’s, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Hazardous Device Team, Southwest Site Services, the Corona Police Community Partnership Group, and Surefire for their generous donations which helped make this training event possible.
