IRS Phone Scam - Caller ID shows call coming from Camillus Police Dept. Do not send money to anyone claiming to be from the IRS or CPD.
Detectives from the Camillus Police Department are investigating a complaint in which a local resident received a call from a person identifying himself as being from the IRS. The caller demands that money be sent electronically via a MoneyGram. The resident then receives a second call. This call showed up on the Caller ID as (315) 487-0102 which is the main number to the Camillus Police Department. The caller then threatens to arrest the resident if the money is not sent.
Under no circumstances will the IRS or the Camillus Police Department ever call a local resident and demand money. The scam artists are spoofing the Camillus Police Department phone number.
Caller ID Spoofing allows a caller to masquerade as someone else by falsifying the number that appears on the recipient's caller ID display.
Once again, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) nor the Camillus Police Department will ever call asking for money or threatening arrest if the money is not sent. Never send money if asked. If you are a victim of this type of scam please contact your local police department.
