Today, a family still mourns the loss of a husband, a father, and a member of the community. In the early morning hours on Sunday, February 21, a traffic collision involving three vehicles occurred on the SR-134 at Orange Grove Boulevard, in the city of Pasadena. This collision resulted in the death of another driver.
The errant driver, suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, fled the scene on foot and was later apprehended by CHP Officers.
CHP Officers are no strangers to this type of tragedy. The ripple effect of drunk driving, not only impacts family members and friends but the community as well. This driver could face prison time, in addition to any court and legal fees, as well as the guilt of taking an innocent life.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, since 1980 alcohol related traffic collision deaths are on the decline. In 2013, 10,076 people were killed in drunk driving crashes - one every 52 minutes - and 290,000 were injured in drunk driving crashes nationwide.
The CHP maintains an aggressive and comprehensive impaired driving program to deter, detect, and arrest impaired drivers. Driving under the influence countermeasures used by the CHP include routine patrol, task force operations, sobriety checkpoints, designate a sober driver education, and active support of DUI laws.
Although CHP Officers are on the front line in apprehending impaired drivers, impaired driving is 100% preventable.
The CHP reminds you, that even one drink can make you an unsafe driver. There is no safe way to drive while under the influence.
