Every 15 Minutes Drunk Driving Diversion Program
The Industry Sheriff's Station, in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol and the Office of Traffic Safety, is taking a proactive step in educating local high school students about making mature decisions when alcoholic beverages are involved. The program's name was conceived in 1990 when one alcohol-related fatality occurred in the United States every 15 minutes.
On March 3, 2016 at La Puente High School, every fifteen minutes, one student will be pulled out of class by the "Grim Reaper". A uniformed officer will read the student's obituary and accompany the student to a room on campus where he/she will be made up to represent the living dead. To enhance the realism of the event, the student will not return to class.
Several of the students will participate in a simulated traffic collision that will be staged on the street directly in front of La Puente High School. The collision will be staged in front of Junior and Senior students. Law enforcement and emergency medical responders will respond to a 911 call and simulate a real-life rescue. A simulated death and hospital transport will occur. A simulated field sobriety test and arrest of one student will also occur.
All the participating students will be transported to an overnight retreat. Deputy personnel and La Puente High School Teachers will chaperone retreat activities. During the retreat, students will participate in trust and team building activities and interact with community members who have been affected by poor choices involving alcohol. As the evening winds down, students have the opportunity to write letters to friends and family.
The following morning, students will be transported back to La Puente High School where they will participate in an assembly and be reunited with friends and family.
