New Bloomington Troopers Receive Cars for Solo Patrol
Bloomington—Yesterday, 46 probationary troopers from the 75th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy class were issued their state police cars at the Indiana State Police Youth Education and Historical Center in Indianapolis. Three of the officers are assigned to the Indiana State Police Bloomington Post and start solo patrol in the district which covers Monroe, Morgan, Lawrence, Brown, Greene and Owen counties. The probationary officers recently completed a three month field training period with veteran troopers. They will serve a one year probationary period before attaining permanent status as a trooper.
In addition to the field training, the new officers received approximately 917 hours of structured training in law enforcement techniques when they were assigned to the Indiana State Police Recruit Academy. The curriculum included criminal law instruction, emergency vehicle operations training, psychology, and survival Spanish. They also developed skills in criminal investigation, vehicle crash investigation, and impaired driver prevention and detection.
The new Bloomington troopers now on solo patrol are:
Nicholas Bartalone from Plainfield, Illinois in Will County and graduated from Plainfield North High School in 2008. He graduated from Loyola University in Chicago in 2012 with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Spanish. Bartalone has been assigned to primarily patrol Greene County.
Caleb Garvin is a 2008 graduate of Eastern Greene High School and is originally from Bloomfield. He attended Vincennes University and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement. Garvin worked for the Brown County Sheriff’s Office as a Jail Officer for 5 years and served as a Reserve Officer for the Ellettsville Police Department for 4 years prior to becoming an Indiana State Trooper. Garvin will primarily be assigned to patrol Greene County.
Ian Matthews is from Spencer and a 2007 graduate of Owen Valley High School. He attended Indiana University and graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Matthews has been assigned Owen County as his primary assignment.
