Off Duty Troopers Respond to a Crash and Arrest Intoxicated Driver

Alexandria – Last night, about 6 p.m. off duty Trooper Dave Preston was driving in his fully marked car, in Madison County, when he overheard radio traffic of a car crash on Alexandria Pike at CR 500 N. Preston was nearby and responded.

He arrived to find a green 1998 Pontiac had been south bound on Alexandria Pike when the driver, William Speicher, age 43 of Alexandria, lost control in the curve at CR 500 N. and ran through the yard of a residence. Pendleton District First Sergeant Tim Kaiser, who was also off duty but in his State Police Commission, responded to the scene to assist, as well as on duty Trooper Mark Hanna.

Investigation by the troopers at the scene led them to believe that Speicher was operating his car while impaired. Further investigation by Trooper Hanna showed that Speicher was operating his car with a B.A.C. more than twice the legal limit of .08% B.A.C.

Speicher was arrested by Trooper Hanna, charged with Operating While Intoxicated, With a Prior Conviction, Level 6 Felony and Reckless Driving, "B" Misdemeanor. Speicher was lodged in the Madison County Jail.

Operation Pull Over, Blitz 85 “Aggressive Drivers,” started on March 4th and runs through Sunday, March 27th. The project puts extra troopers on the road, working federally funded overtime, looking for impaired and aggressive drivers.

Accidents resulting from dangerous and impaired driving are preventable. The Indiana State Police and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute would like to remind motorists safe driving is as simple as following these easy steps:

• Before the celebration begins, plan a safe way home
• Do not drive impaired
• If you do drink, use a taxi, public transportation, ridesharing service or designate a sober friend or family member, and give them your keys
• If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911
• If you know someone who is about to drive or ride impaired, take their keys and help make arrangements to get them home safely

All Suspects Are Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty in a Court of Law
