Burglary and Theft Awareness
The Whitefish Bay Police Department is asking residents to please be aware of a few things they can do to help keep them from becoming a victim of a burglary or theft. Please consider doing the following in an effort to help:
Automobile safety
• Keep all cars locked during the day and night when not in use
• Do not keep valuables in your vehicle(s), especially in plain sight of someone walking by the automobile
• Do not keep house keys or spare car keys to other vehicle(s) you own in your automobile
Home safety
• Keep your house locked when you are not home but also at night when you are sleeping. This includes doors and windows. Also keep all garage doors closed and garage service doors locked as well
• Do not keep any valuables in your house close to windows and entrances that would make someone want to take the risk to enter your home and steal them. This includes something as simple as a wallet, purse or car keys directly inside of a foyer entrance
• Try to leave lights on, especially at night around the entrances to your home
• If you are going to be out of town please stop your mail or have a neighbor collect it. Also please notify the Whitefish Bay Police Department of when you will leave and return. This can be done by calling 414-962-3830 during normal business hours
The Whitefish Bay Police Department took a burglary complaint on 02/25/16 in which a home was entered sometime after 9 PM and subsequently two vehicles were stolen. On 03/22/16 three arrests were made in that case.
On 03/29/16 Whitefish Bay Police took another report of a burglary and car theft in which an unlocked residence was entered sometime after 11 PM and a wallet, house and car keys were taken from just inside the entrance. The home owner’s vehicle parked in the driveway was subsequently stolen as well. No arrest has been made in this incident at this time.
Other local police departments including Fox Point and Shorewood have had similar burglaries in the last couple of months as well as numerous entry to unlocked automobile reports in which the suspect(s) were looking for money, valuables or the keys to the vehicle.
If you ever see any suspicious behavior such as someone trying to open car doors on your block or someone walking around a house that you know does not belong at the residence, please call 911 immediately. Do not wait. Whitefish Bay is a very safe place to live but we encourage all residents to make themselves a “hard target” against such property crimes. Since 2012 crime is down 25% in Whitefish Bay. With your help we hope to help everyone enjoy the upcoming spring and summer we have all waited so long for after yet another long and cold Wisconsin winter.
