POLICE: Phone Scam Alert Reporting Info
The National White Collar Crime Center would like to remind taxpayers that the IRS generally contacts people via mail, not by phone, and will not ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card, a money order or wire transfer. The IRS also, will not ask for a credit card number over the phone.
Any agency having residents complaining of this type of call should refer them to the Internal Revenue Service at 800-829-1040. Residents can also fill out the “IRS Impersonation Scam” form on the TIGTA website, www.tigta.gov or call the TIGTA at 800-366-4484.
