Crime Prevention Tips

There has been a recent number of thefts from vehicles in the Third Precinct; therefore we would like to remind residents of some simple, yet effective ways to help residents protect themselves from victimization.

Help reduce incidents of theft from vehicles

Some relatively simple steps will greatly reduce the odds of being victimized.

First and foremost, please remember to always lock all doors and close all windows in your vehicle at all times - while home and away.  Remove valuables and keys from vehicle, especially what is easily visible.  This includes all removable electronics, purses, wallets, loose change and packages of any kind.   If you must keep these items in your car, please place in a locked glove box or the trunk.  If you have an SUV or van do your best to conceal items from outside view.  Even when fueling your vehicle or loading packages, leaving anything of value in open view while you are distracted could be an opportunity for a thief to act.  Always be aware of your surroundings and those around you.

Help reduce incidents of home burglaries

Always lock all doors and windows in your house and when possible, do not leave valuables such as purses in plain sight near windows.  Some additional recommendations:

• Use motion sensing outdoor lights
• A couple of lights, TV or radio sounds can make it seem like someone is home
• Trim hedges and trees to increase your home's visibility and reduce the opportunity for thieves to conceal themselves
• An alarm system or, at the very least, an alarm system sign may make would be thieves think twice
• Consider installing video surveillance cameras

Scam Alert

Every day, scores of people across the United States fall victim to predators that seek to take advantage of the vulnerable.  Unfortunately, many in Suffolk County have fallen victim to some of these scam artists.  Some of the current scams being seen throughout the country are:

"THIS IS PSE&G, WE WILL SHUT OFF YOUR SERVICE" SCAM

"THIS IS THE IRS, YOU OWE AND WE ARE COMING FOR YOU" SCAM

KIDNAP - EXTORTION SCAM

HOUSING RENTAL SCAMS

CRAIGS LIST SCAMS

"YOU HAVE WON A PRIZE....." SCAMS

DIVERSION/DECEPTION SCAM TO COMMIT BURGLARY/THEFT

The County and AARP Long Island additionally provided residents with the following tips to prevent financial fraud:

• Never give out financial information - including social security number - over the phone unless you initiated the call.
• Medicare employees will never ask for your full social security or Medicare number.
• Consult a family member or loved one if you're feeling uncertain about requests for money or personal information
• Never send money today for the promise of more money later
• Beware of pushy marketers or solicitors, do not hesitate to take down their contact information and follow up with due diligence
• Be aware that these scams are widespread and employ a healthy dose of skepticism when receiving any unsolicited contact
