2 injured in rollover crash on I-94
Chesterton, Porter County-- 2 Illinois men were injured in a rollover crash last night on I-94 at the 27.8 mile marker. This location is approximately 2 miles east of State Road 49.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper John Holmen revealed that on 4/20/2016 at approximately 10:50 p.m., a 1994 Lincoln was traveling east on I-94 at the 27.8 mile marker. For unknown reasons the vehicle drove off the right side of the road where it struck an Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) electrical box. The vehicle then proceeded to rollover several times through a ditch and over a fence where it came to rest on its roof.
The driver, identified as Tyrone Butts, 57, of Burnham, IL, was ejected from the vehicle and later transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary, IN with serious injuries. The passenger, identified as Ronald Doherty, 70, also of Burnham, IL, was trapped inside of the vehicle and had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Chesterton Fire Department. Doherty was later flown to Christ Advocate Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL for treatment of his injuries.
Neither occupant of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Trooper Holmen and the Indiana State Police remind all occupants of a motor vehicle to use their seatbelts as required by law. Using seatbelts will help to ensure that occupants are not ejected and will greatly reduce the chances of serious and potential life threatening injuries that can result from a vehicle crash.
