Alsip man dies in single vehicle crash on I-90
Hammond, Lake County-- An Alsip, IL man died in a single vehicle crash this afternoon on I-90 (Indiana Toll Road) at the 4.1 mile marker. The 4.1 mile marker is approximately 4 miles from the Indiana/Illinois state line and is an overpass crossing over Calumet Avenue.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper George Hornsby revealed that this afternoon at approximately 2:45 p.m. a gray 2012 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling east on I-90 at the 4.1 mile marker when for unknown reasons the vehicle left the roadway and drove into the median. Upon going into the median the vehicle continued for approximately 450 feet and then over an embankment causing the vehicle to become airborne. The vehicle then fell approximately 30 feet and landed on its roof below the Toll Road on Calumet Ave.
The driver, identified as Dwayne Jeffries, 57, of Alsip, Illinois was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Lake County Coroner. Jeffries may have had a medical condition prior to the crash; an autopsy is pending.
Calumet Ave was closed for approximately 3 hours for crash investigation.
Assisting were the Hammond Fire Department, Hammond Police Department, Lake County Coroner's Office, Herrera's Towing, Trooper Paul Arnold, Master Trooper Floyd Archie, Sgt. Bill Jones and Trooper O'Bryan Winfield.
Notification has been made to family.
