4/26/16, press release: Retail Theft

On the afternoon of April 26, 2016, Burlington Police Department officers responded to a reported theft that occurred at a retail store located in the Burlington Town Center. It was reported that a female suspect had stolen several hundred dollars worth of merchandise and had left the store. Officers responded and apprehended the female who was identified as Amanda Bean (age 32 of South Burlington). Bean was arrested and cited for Retail Theft.

About two hours later, officers responded to another retail theft, this time at the Ski Rack in downtown Burlington. It was reported that a male and female had stolen hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise. Officers were able to identify the subjects as Lawrence Ritchie (age 44 of South Burlington) and Amanda Bean, the same female who was arrested earlier in the day for the retail theft at the Burlington Town Center.

On the afternoon of April 28, 2016, members of the Burlington Police Department Street Crimes Unit (“SCU”) located Ritchie and Bean and arrested them for their involvement in the theft at the Ski Rack. Ritchie has a court ordered curfew and he was charged with Retail Theft and Violation of Conditions of Release. Ritchie was arraigned at the Chittenden Superior Court the following day and is being detained for lack of $1,000 bail. Bean was issued a citation to appear at the Chittenden Superior Court on May 3, 2016 and released.

Vermont Superior Court records reveal that Ritchie has six active sets of conditions of release related to nine different offenses, eight of which are for retail theft. Ritchie’s criminal history revealed that he has been arrested more than fifty times and has thirty misdemeanor convictions and ten felony convictions; twelve of his convictions are for Retail Theft. Bean’s criminal history revealed that she has been arrested about twenty times and that she has twelve misdemeanor convictions and one felony conviction; seven of her convictions for Retail Theft.
