Single Vehicle Crash on SR 56 Claims Life of Petersburg Woman
Pike County – At approximately 8:20 a.m. this morning, Indiana State Police and Pike County Sheriff’s Department responded to a single vehicle crash on SR 56 near CR 1100 East that claimed the life of an 89-year-old Petersburg woman.
Preliminary investigation revealed Sharon L. Cannon, 54, of Petersburg, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet east on SR 56 approaching CR 1100 East. For unknown reasons, Cannon’s vehicle left the roadway on the right side, entered the ditch and struck an embankment. Cannon was not injured. Her two passengers, Edward Bennett, 93, and Carolyn Bennett, 89, both from Petersburg, were taken to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where Carolyn Bennett died from her injuries. Edward Bennett is currently being treated for a head injury. The vehicle was totaled. Seat belt usage is unknown at this time.
