Significant traffic shift including detouring eastbound Michigan Ave vehicles will begin on Tuesday, May 24th
Get Ready, Get Set & Go! The significant traffic shift that includes detouring eastbound Michigan Ave vehicles will begin on Tuesday, May 24th at approximately 7am. Hoffman Bros. and the various sub-contractors continue to push forward, in spite of the patches of rain, making good progress. Hoffman Bros. will meet their 21-day deadline of completing the Monroe Street intersection. Hoffman Bros. crews will begin moving east as of Tuesday, May 24th next week.
We reported out last week that the City’s construction cam, hosted on the City’s homepage at www.cityofsaline.org, was back on-line and viewable from desk top computers and tablets as of last Friday. More good news is that now folks are be able to access the construction cam from their smartphones (iPhone and Android platforms).
Week of May 23rd
Traffic Information
As stated above, the big traffic shift that includes detouring eastbound Michigan Ave vehicles is scheduled to be implemented on Tuesday, May 24th at 7am. The eastbound traffic will access Henry Street via traveling south on Monroe Street. Monroe Street will be one-way to the south from Michigan Ave to Henry Street. There will also be a stop sign on Monroe Street at the Henry Street intersection for vehicles traveling northbound from south of the Henry Street intersection. W. Henry Street will be one-way only to the east from Monroe Street to Lewis Street. Henry Street will allow two-way traffic from Lewis Street east. There will also be fully-operational traffic signals (green/yellow/red) on Henry Street at Ann Arbor Street, Harris Street and Old Creek Drive). Eastbound traffic will be able to return to Michigan Ave at Old Creek Drive. Westbound Michigan Ave traffic will continue on the north half of Michigan Ave. Lastly, the Saline Police Department will begin having additional officers patrolling the construction zone/detour route. The increased police presence is the result of the agreement between the City of Saline and MDOT for MDOT to fund additional police patrols in and around the construction zone/detour route.
Note: The failed portions of Henry Street will be repaired with asphalt patches on Monday, May 23rd in preparation for the implementation of the Henry Street detour on Tuesday, May 24th.
A friendly reminder – City staff encourages everyone to slow down, be patient and obey the traffic signs. In addition, please do not take short-cuts through private property in an attempt to avoid the current traffic shifts/detour routes, as it is illegal and unsafe.
Pedestrian Traffic
Regarding pedestrian traffic, there are parts of the construction zone that are not open to pedestrian traffic. For example, the walkway in front of Oakwood Cemetery on the Michigan Ave side is not open to pedestrian traffic; there are signs in place that say sidewalk closed. There are also signs designating alternate pedestrian routes throughout the construction zone. Please obey the signs and seek alternate pedestrian routes that don’t include walking down the middle of re-routed traffic lanes.
Construction Activities
Hoffman Bros. will continue working to finish up the south half of the Monroe Street intersection. Concrete curb & gutter is being installed today, Friday. Finish grading of the south half of Michigan Ave at Monroe Street will take place on Saturday in preparation for paving of Michigan Ave at Monroe Street this coming Monday, May 23rd. Once the big traffic shift occurs on Tuesday, May 24th, Hoffman Bros. and their sub-contractors will begin preparing for material removals by installing concrete barrier walls along the remainder of the south half of Michigan Ave. Specifically, we will see the cold mill machine to begin asphalt removals and the saw cutting crew to start concrete road base removals. Hoffman Bros. will not be removing all of the concrete road base as they will be targeting specific locations that include new utilities (water main, sanitary sewer, storm sewer).
Note: DTE has completed relocating all of the gas main within the construction zone, except for the 12” high pressure gas main that is located along the north side of Michigan Ave between Davenport and Maple. This portion of the gas main relocation will be delayed until the first part of August 2016 so it doesn’t create such a large conflict with the Michigan Ave project and slow down Hoffman Bros.
Please stay tuned for updates as the Michigan Ave project progresses. The City of Saline staff will be providing a minimum of a weekly update and sometimes daily informational postings depending on what is taking place in the construction zone.
Remember to visit our local Saline businesses during and after this great project and look for the Pave It Forward logo and the fun promotions being provide by Saline Main Street and the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce.
