Motorcyclist Airlifted from Crash
Fountain County-Yesterday at approximately 9:25 p.m. on I-74 westbound near the 11 mile marker (that is three miles east of the Covington /8 mm exit), a single motorcycle crash sent the driver, by helicopter, to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis with serious injuries.
The Indiana State Police at Lafayette Post along with Fountain County Sheriff’s Department were sent to the scene to find the driver, Kaleb M. Copenhaver, 22 of Kingman, IN lying in the median with the 1994 Honda motorcycle lying in the eastbound lanes of the interstate. The investigation has revealed that the motorcycle was going westbound in the left lane when the driver failed to negotiate a slight right turn in the roadway. The motorcycle went into the median, struck the dirt ditch causing the driver to be ejected and the motorcycle to go airborne. Copenhaver landed in the median and the motorcycle landed in the eastbound lanes of the interstate.
Copenhaver was airlifted to the hospital by StatFlight with life-threatening injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash with results pending. No helmet was in use at the time of the crash. The crash is being investigated by Trooper Nate Hampton. Others assisting at the scene were the Covington Police Department and Covington Fire and Ambulance. The investigation is continuing.
Picture is of the motorcycle.
Suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
