Cambridge City – A stop for a traffic violation this morning ended with a Straughn man going to jail on a drug charge. Around 8:30 a.m., Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) Trooper Brandon Steffee was north bound on SR1 at I-70, when a Buick SUV in front of him turned onto the I-70 west bound ramp without using a turn signal.

Steffee stopped the vehicle, and after making contact with the male driver and male passenger, he became suspicious. A Hancock County K-9 Deputy was on I-70 nearby, working special project with a local Task Force, and went to assist Steffee. His partner did an open air sniff of the vehicle and indicated the presence of narcotics.

A search of the vehicle turned up the drug Suboxone. The vehicle passenger, Matthew Fournier, age 37 of Straughn, was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Level “A” Misdemeanor. Fournier was lodged in the Wayne County Jail.

Lieutenant Tom Dujmovich, Commander of the Pendleton State Police Post, would like to remind all motorists that there will be extra troopers on the roadways this week and upcoming holiday weekend. ISP is participating in the “Click it or Ticket” Campaign and Operation CARE, or Combined Accident Reduction Effort. Troopers will be working overtime looking for aggressive drivers, impaired drivers, and those that don’t “buckle up.”

The Pendleton District covers the eight counties of Delaware, Madison, and Randolph; Henry, Wayne, Union, Rush and Fayette counties. Motorists are encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1. Give a vehicle description, location, and direction of travel. Never follow an impaired driver.

Also make sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled up. Seatbelts reduce your risk of injury and death by 50% in a crash.
