Anderson Officer Assaulted with Coffee Cup. Suspect should use decaf

On Thursday May 26, 2016 at about 10:00 AM Anderson Officers were dispatched to a family disturbance in the 1600 block of Manter Dr. Dispatch advised an adult male subject threatened to kill his mother with a knife and had grabbed her by the throat. The mother had gotten away from her son and had locked herself in her bedroom. On arrivals, officers located the suspect, 37 year old Mark Sanchez of Anderson in the kitchen acting agitated. Because the original caller advised that Sanchez had a knife, they did not approach Sanchez. Instead they attempted to coax him out of the kitchen and away from any weapons to talk to him.

While talking to Sanchez he became more upset and picked up a cup of coffee. Sanchez flung the coffee at the closest officer, coating him with the beverage. The officer attempted to turn away from the coffee and as soon as he turned back towards Sanchez, Sanchez threw the now empty coffee cup at the officer. The victim officer was struck in the back of the head with the coffee cup. A second officer on scene immediately deployed his Taser on Sanchez, but it was not completely effective. Sanchez fought through the Taser and charged at the officers. After a brief struggle, Sanchez was placed into custody.

One officer was treated at the scene and the officer struck by the coffee cup was treated at the hospital and released. Sanchez was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries prior to being booked into Shasta County Jail for assault on an officer, the assault and threats on his mother and several other charges
