It’s that time of year again when the scammers come out.
A Morgan County resident was recently contacted by a man who claimed to be an “Officer in the Bond Department” at a local police agency. He told the female victim that her granddaughter had been arrested but he did not believe her to be guilty of the crime. He stated he would help her granddaughter bond out if the victim would get an iTunes card and send him the information on it. The “officer” even allowed the victim to talk to her “granddaughter” for a moment. Needless to say, the “granddaughter” was not related to the victim. The victim contacted the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office and no money was lost.
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office WILL NOT call you and attempt to get you to pay money for the release of anyone. If a person is legally arrested, they will initiate contact with their family or friends to secure their release. We also do not accept iTunes cards, Green Dot cards, or any other type of gift cards for payment of a bail.
If you are contacted by these people, the easiest way to handle it is to just hang up on them.
We are also still getting reports of residents receiving calls from individuals claiming to be representatives of the IRS who are attempting to collect a debt that does not exist.
The IRS does not conduct debt collections over the telephone, so please ignore these calls, hang up on them and block whatever number(s) they call from.
